Types of Mattresses
Having the right mattress is essential for getting a good night´s sleep. There is an extensive array of mattress types and brands on the market to choose from - such as pocket sprung, water, air, gel, memory foam, pillow top and latex. By far the most widely used are pocket sprung and memory foam mattresses (our most popular beds often feature both- pocket springs with a layer of memory foam on top). Below is a description of various mattress types which we provide.
Pocket Sprung Mattresses
A pocket sprung mattress is quite simply the very best that money can buy. When you consider that a quality mattress will last 8-10 years, the overall price is not a great deal in comparison to buying 2 or 3 inferior quality mattresses (which can lose tension and sag-causing back problems and sleepless nights).
The core of a mattress needs to support your body in its correct posture as you sleep. A traditional system used to achieve this level of support is called a POCKET SPRING UNIT. A pocket sprung mattress can contain anywhere between 600 and 3000 individually encased springs (consider that a standard mattress has 325 interlocking springs). These individual pockets allow each spring to operate independently of its neighbours, allowing the mattress to perfectly follow the contours of your body. Also, these individual springs limit the movement that is transferred across the mattress. This ensures that each partner has the best chance of getting an undisturbed sleep!
Memory Foam Mattresses
Initially developed by NASA, memory foam is proven to be a superb sleep material: by using the sleeper's body heat, the memory foam is able to mold to the sleeper´s contours offering exceptional levels of support without creating pressure points. Memory foam is scientifically proven to reduce the need to move whilst asleep, resulting in a much deeper night's sleep.
Memory foam is often used above a support foam core. This however can get very warm (especially in this hot climate!) For a cooler, better ventilated sleep, memory foam is perfectly suitable when used with orthopaedic or pocket springs.
Many of our mattresses (eg. Georgia, Total comfort 1000) also now feature AIRFLOW BORDERS which allow the memory foam to breathe and also assist in keeping the mattress clean!
Pillow Top Mattresses
In addition to being associated with luxury, pillow top mattresses provide several benefits to its users.
A pillow top mattress gently contours to your body and automatically adjusts to the different pressure points of the body. This allows you to be fully supported during sleep and provides you with maximum comfort. The contouring of the pillow top allows less disturbing motion, which can often hinder a good night’s rest. The extra cushioning of a pillow top allows for proper support for the spine while also perfectly contouring to the back, hips, and shoulders.
Pillow top mattresses tend to last much longer than traditional mattresses because they return to their proper shape after each night’s rest. Because of this, there is no need to flip the mattress every couple of years to lessen the wear and tear of the mattress. High quality pillow top mattresses are built to last a very long time.
Gel Mattresses
A gel mattress is made with a unique support layer that provides a softer but very durable feel. With its gel effect, the open cell structure moulds to your individual shape while ensuring that the foam does not get too hot or too cold. Many of our gel incorporated mattresses cool up to 3 times faster than traditional materials! With a choice of solid gel mattresses or a mix of spring and gel layers; these mattresses are ideal for anyone looking for a medium firm, medium or medium soft, comfort graded mattress.
Latex Mattresses
Made with natural latex; which is derived from the sap of the rubber tree. A latex mattress is incredibly durable and will last for many years, making it fantastic value for money. They are very supportive and will mould to the shape of your body. A latex mattress is great for allergy sufferers as they are hypoallergenic and anti-microbial. Latex mattresses tend to be medium firm or firm comfort graded mattresses.
